A compound body by principles of gestalt perception is more prone to be understood as a whole rather than the sum of its parts. By proximity, similarity, and continuity a clay slab can appear as skin: folded into a tube, it’s a neck; draped over a frame, it’s a torso; two pairs of hooved legs summon a semantic memory of a stable. Segmentation allows for modularity, transportability, optimal storage options, and adaptation for a use in a different purpose. All such qualities are integral when wanting to make big heavy ceramic things, and when I look at all these parts, I see a llama lazing in the grass.
